Debt Consolidation

Tackling credit card debt the simple way

A good combination of lifestyle change and money saving strategy may bring you the long-awaited relief from your credit card debt. We often tend to put all the blame for our debt crisis on credit cards and credit card companies. But, in reality, we often have only ourselves to blame for the mess we land ourselves in. There are, however, some simple ways to get out of this debt trap. To begin with, you have to identify those areas for which you spend excessively and unnecessarily. You then have to suitably change your spending habits, as that is the only way you can stop your debts from accumulating continuously.

Consolidate whenever you can

List all your credit card debt and note down the amount you owe and the interest rate for each credit card. Try to consolidate those debts whenever you can. If your credit rating is satisfactory, chances are that you will be given opportunity as part of a promotional offer to transfer your debt from one credit card to another with lower interest rates for a certain period of time. You just seek an interest rate that is lower than what you are now paying to avoid excessive finance charges. You should, however, be careful about hidden fees. Sometimes balances are transferable even without a transfer fee.

Payment plan, Progress chart

When you decide to change your spending habits to treat your credit card blues, you can chalk out a payment plan. Find out how much of your monthly earning can you utilize for reducing your credit card debt. Be realistic while planning. If your first plan fails, find alternative ways of creating a cash flow to help reduce your debt. A progress chart is also extremely useful in which you have to list your credit cards starting from the least balance due to the maximum balance due. Now determine the amount payable for each credit card and document in each column. You should pay for each card on a monthly basis, with payments being applied from each paycheck received. Such a chart will help you maintain a strict budget.

And reward yourself for all your sacrifices and hard work. Celebrate, in a simple way, once you have paid a credit card down. Throwing a huge party and spending a lot of money should be strictly avoided. Just go for whatever luxury or simple indulgence will take you a step further in achieving your goal.
